Custom face pillows for POD stores: which providers carry them, sublimation explained, and the gift margin math

A custom face pillow is one of the most-gifted novelty products in print-on-demand, and one of the most misunderstood. Search the term and you get consumer brands selling plush cutouts shaped like a person’s head, Amazon listings, and photo-printing apps. None of them explain what a POD seller can actually list, fulfill, and profit from. Two very different products share this keyword. One of them works on a no-minimum POD model today. The other does not. This guide splits them apart, then walks through the print method, live provider pricing, unit cost math, the niches that buy, and the store setup that keeps your margin intact.

We pulled Printful’s live US pricing for this post in October 2026. The numbers are tighter than most guides suggest, mostly because of shipping, and the pricing advice below reflects that.

Two different products share the custom face pillow keyword

custom face pillow

When a buyer types “custom face pillow” into Google, they mean one of two things. Your listing strategy depends on knowing which.

Product 1: the shaped cutout face pillow

This is the viral version. A plush pillow die-cut into the outline of a face or a full person, usually 17 to 24 inches tall, printed on both sides, stuffed soft. Consumer brands built whole storefronts on it. It photographs well, it gets shared, and it carries a $35 to $55 retail price.

The problem for a POD seller is supply. Shaped pillows need custom cutting and sewing per order. They are not part of Printful’s catalog. Specialty suppliers make them, but they usually work on minimums (often 10 to 25 units per design) or run their own direct-to-consumer storefronts and do not white-label at all. You can sell this product, but not on a pure no-inventory model.

Product 2: the square throw pillow printed with a face photo

This is the accessible version. A standard square polyester pillow, printed edge to edge with a photo of a face: a partner, a dog, a baby, a grandparent. It ships with an insert, ready to sit on a sofa. Printful carries it. The Printify network carries it. There is no minimum, no inventory, and no stock left in a drawer when a design stops selling.

The demand overlaps almost completely. The buyer wants a face on a pillow as a gift. Most will happily take a square pillow if the photo is printed well and the listing makes the gift feel personal. So the practical answer is simple: lead with the square photo pillow, and treat the shaped cutout as an optional upgrade once you have proven demand and want to test a batch.

The rest of this guide focuses on the square format, because that is the product you can list this afternoon.

Sublimation on polyester: how a custom face pillow gets printed

heat press sublimation for a custom face pillow cover

Face pillows are printed by dye sublimation. Printful lists the technique on its basic pillow as all-over synthetic printing, which is the same family of process used on mouse pads, bandanas, and beach towels.

How the process works

  1. The design is printed onto transfer paper with sublimation ink.
  2. The paper is pressed against the white polyester fabric under a heat press, roughly 375 to 400°F.
  3. At that temperature the ink turns to gas and bonds into the polyester fibers themselves.
  4. The cover is cut, sewn, and stuffed with the insert.

Because the dye sits inside the fiber rather than on top of it, the print does not crack, peel, or feel stiff. For a face photo this matters. Skin tones, hair, and fur render as continuous tone, with no visible ink layer.

Why cotton and linen fail

Sublimation dye only bonds to polyester. On cotton or linen it washes out, because there is nothing for it to bond with. That is why POD photo pillows are polyester, and why any supplier promising a “cotton sublimated pillow” deserves a second question. If a buyer asks for linen texture, the honest answer is a polyester fabric with a linen-look weave, not real linen.

Three print rules for face photos

  • White base only. Sublimation ink is transparent. Anything you want dark, including a black background, has to be in the design file.
  • Resolution at print size. Aim for 150 DPI minimum at the final size. An 18×18 inch face needs about 2,700 x 2,700 pixels. A phone photo of a face cropped tight often falls short, so build a check into your upload flow.
  • Keep the face off the seam. Leave margin around the edges. Printful’s file guidelines show the safe area per size. Eyes and mouth on a seam are the fastest route to a refund.

Most face pillow complaints come from the source photo, not the print. A blurry, backlit, or heavily compressed image prints exactly as blurry, backlit, and compressed as it was. The seller who catches that at upload keeps the margin.

Printful

Printful’s All-Over Print Basic Pillow starts at $13.57 for the 14×14 inch size with print included, priced for the US region. Larger sizes cost more, so check the size selector before you set retail. Printful’s bulk calculator shows 5% off at 25 items ($12.89 at 14×14), which matters little for one-off gifts but helps with event orders. US shipping starts at $10.89. That shipping figure is the number that reshapes the math in the next section.

Printful also sells cover-only pillow cases at a lower price. Be careful here. A buyer who orders a “face pillow” expects something stuffed and ready to hug. Selling a cover to someone expecting a pillow is a guaranteed return. Label the SKUs clearly or skip covers entirely.

Printify network

Printify routes your order to independent print providers. You will usually find a lower base cost than Printful, but the print provider you pick determines quality, color accuracy, and turnaround. Order a sample from your chosen provider with a real face photo, not a stock graphic. Skin tones reveal color calibration problems that abstract art hides.

Shaped cutout suppliers

If you want the cutout version, you are in supplier-direct territory. Expect per-design minimums, longer production, and manual order handling. Treat it as a batch product for proven designs, for example a pet portrait pillow that has already sold 30 square units, not as a launch SKU.

custom face pillow unit cost and shipping math

Most guides quote a pillow base cost and stop. On face pillows, shipping is almost as large as the product cost, so it has to be in the math from the start.

The verified anchor

Printful 14×14 basic pillow: $13.57 base + $10.89 US shipping = $24.46 landed.

Three base-cost scenarios

Larger sizes step up in price. Rather than guess exact figures, here is the math at three base costs. Plug in the live price for your size.

Base cost+ US shippingLandedRetailGross profitGross margin
$13.57 (14×14, verified)$10.89$24.46$39$14.5437%
$13.57 (14×14, verified)$10.89$24.46$45$20.5446%
$17.00 (scenario)$10.89$27.89$49$21.1143%
$20.00 (scenario)$10.89$30.89$55$24.1144%

Payment processing takes roughly another 3% plus a fixed fee per order on most gateways. On a $45 sale, budget about $1.60.

What the math tells you

  • Do not price a face pillow at $29. At $24.46 landed, a $29 retail price leaves about $4.50 before processing. One reprint wipes out four sales.
  • $39 is the floor for the smallest size if shipping is included in the price. $45 is a more comfortable target.
  • Charging shipping separately changes the picture. If you list at $36 plus $9.99 shipping, the buyer pays about the same total, and your product margin looks clean on the listing. Test both, because free-shipping framing often converts better on gift items.

The two-pillow gift set

The best margin move is the set. “You and me” (two partners), “Me and the dog,” “Both grandkids.” Take the worst case, where both pillows ship at the full first-item rate: 2 x $24.46 = $48.92 landed. At $79 retail, that is $30.08 gross profit, a 38% margin, and more than double the gross dollars of a single $39 pillow. In practice the second item usually ships at a lower add-on rate, so check your shipping table and the real number will be better.

A face pillow is a gross-dollar product, not a gross-percentage product. Optimize for dollars per order.

Six niches with real custom face pillow demand

long distance relationship custom face pillow gift

Face pillows are an emotional purchase. The niches that work are the ones where the photo carries a story the buyer already feels.

1. Long-distance relationships (the lead niche)

This is the largest segment and the reason the cutout version went viral. One partner sends their face so the other has something to hug. It is a high-emotion, low-price-resistance gift, and buyers post the unboxing. Listing copy should speak to distance, deployment, college, and work travel. Valentine’s Day, anniversaries, and the run-up to a separation (a move, a deployment) are the demand peaks.

2. Pet portrait pillows

Dog and cat owners buy for themselves and for each other. Breed communities share photos constantly, so one good listing travels. Pet faces also forgive photo quality better than human faces, since fur hides compression. If you already sell pet products, this is the easiest add. See our custom dog bandana guide for the pet buyer profile.

3. Memorial pillows

A departed pet or family member, printed on something soft. This is a sensitive market and a genuinely large one. Write the listing with care, offer a proof before production, and never use urgency tactics. Memorial buyers often return at holidays and anniversaries.

4. Baby and new parent gifts

A newborn’s face on a nursery pillow, bought for showers and first birthdays. It pairs naturally with onesies and blankets if you already carry them.

5. Original meme and inside-joke gifts

The ironic gift: a coworker’s face for a farewell party, a best friend’s worst photo for a birthday. The buyer supplies the photo and the joke. Do not sell celebrity faces. Using a real person’s likeness without permission creates right-of-publicity risk, and marketplaces take those listings down fast.

6. Fandom with original art

Fan communities buy a lot of soft goods, but idol and character faces carry licensing and likeness problems. Stick to original illustrated characters or commissioned art. The face pillow format still works. The face just has to be yours to sell.

Across all six, the bottleneck is the same: listings. Each niche wants its own images, title, description, and SEO. MEGA automates that step entirely, from niche idea to live WooCommerce listing in under seven minutes, so testing six niches costs an afternoon instead of a month.

Shopify 1% math on a $45 custom face pillow

shopify platform fee on a custom face pillow

Face pillows sit in the $39 to $79 range, which is exactly where a percentage platform fee starts to add up. Here is the Shopify 1% override at a $45 average order value.

Monthly orders at $45 AOVMonthly revenueShopify 1% per monthPer year
100$4,500$45$540
200$9,000$90$1,080
500$22,500$225$2,700

That is before the apps. A face pillow store needs a photo upload field, and on Shopify that usually means a product personalization app, commonly $19 to $49 per month. Add a bundle app for two-pillow sets and the fixed costs stack on top of the percentage.

Put it against the unit math. At 200 orders a month, $1,080 a year in override is the gross profit on roughly 53 pillows at $20.54 each. That is more than a week of sales each year going to the platform rather than to you.

WooCommerce overhead is fixed: hosting usually runs $15 to $30 a month whatever your order count. For the full side-by-side, read our WooCommerce vs Shopify breakdown for POD sellers.

None of this means Shopify sellers are doing it wrong. Many grow quickly there, and the ad-driven playbook works for plenty of people. The point is narrower. On a product where shipping already eats close to half the landed cost, a fee that grows with revenue is a bigger share of what you keep. Owning the store fixes that.

WooCommerce photo upload setup for a custom face pillow

customer photo upload for a custom face pillow order

The photo is the product. Your store’s job is to collect a usable one, confirm it, and pass it cleanly to fulfillment. Here is a setup that works on an owned WooCommerce store.

1. One variable product for sizes and sets

Create a single product with a “Size” attribute (14×14, 16×16, 18×18) and a “Set” attribute (single, two-pillow set). Each variation gets its own price and SKU. This is native WooCommerce, with no bundle app required.

2. Add a file upload field

Use WooCommerce Product Add-Ons (an official extension with an annual license) or a free file-upload field plugin. Accept JPG and PNG, set a sensible file size cap, and add helper text: “Use the original photo, not a screenshot. Face toward the camera, good light, no filters.” That one line prevents more refunds than any other change.

3. Add a resolution check

Several upload plugins can reject images below a minimum pixel size. Set it to match the largest size you sell, or at least show a warning. A buyer who sees “This photo may print blurry at 18×18” will usually pick a better photo or a smaller size.

4. Offer a proof for sets and memorial orders

Add a checkbox: “Email me a preview before printing.” Memorial buyers and set buyers want it. Set processing time on those variations to cover the step.

5. Add a consent line

Include a required checkbox confirming the buyer has the right to use the photo. It protects you on the meme and coworker gifts, and it filters out the celebrity requests you should not fulfill anyway.

6. Keep the reorder path short

Store the uploaded file with the order. Memorial and relationship buyers often come back at the next holiday for a second size or a matching blanket. With an owned store, they reorder from their account page and you keep the customer email. For bigger formats to offer them next, see our custom canvas print guide.

Conclusion: the custom face pillow verdict for POD sellers

pet portrait custom face pillow on a sofa

The custom face pillow is two products wearing one name. The shaped cutout is the one that went viral, and it is a batch product with minimums. The square photo pillow is the one you can list today with zero inventory, through Printful or the Printify network.

The economics are workable if you respect shipping. At $13.57 base and $10.89 shipping, a small pillow lands at $24.46. Price at $39 to $45 for singles, push the two-pillow set as the default gift, and you are working with $20 to $30 of gross profit per order. Price at $29 and you are working for the shipping company.

The niches are clear: long-distance couples first, then pets, memorials, babies, inside jokes, and original fandom art. Every one of them is a story the buyer already feels. Your listing just has to show it.

And the store matters. A photo upload field, a proof option, and a set builder are native work on WooCommerce, with no percentage fee growing alongside your order count.
