custom name necklace blank steel and gold-tone bars on slate

Custom name necklace for POD sellers: engraved steel bars, the WooCommerce name workflow, and the $44 margin math

A custom name necklace is one of the most searched personalized gifts on the internet. The phrase pulls 18,100 searches a month in the US, and every result on page one is a retail brand selling $40 to $150 gold nameplates from its own jewelry bench. Not one result explains how a small POD store can sell the same gift with no laser, no stock, and no jeweler on payroll.

This guide covers the seller side. It explains what a POD name necklace really is, where to source one in 2026, how to design for a 32 mm engraving area, and how to collect each buyer’s name on an owned WooCommerce store without typos. That last part is the hard one. Then we run the margin math at live prices. Every price below was checked on October 20, 2026.

A note on how this was made: like every post on mega.management, this one was researched, drafted, and illustrated with the help of the MEGA stack. The product’s own blog is the case study.

What a custom name necklace is in POD terms

Blank stainless steel tag and gold-tone circle pendants ready for engraving

Two very different products share this keyword. Set your expectations before you list either one.

The cut-out nameplate. This is the “Carrie” necklace. The name itself is the pendant, laser-cut from a sheet of gold-plated sterling silver or solid gold in a script font. Every piece is cut to order from a unique outline. Retail brands like Onecklace and NamePlateDepot own this style, and it is what most of the current search results show. It is not a standard POD product. No major POD catalog offers cut-out script nameplates at a no-minimum base price.

The engraved blank. This is the POD version. A provider stocks blank bars, circles, and hearts in stainless steel. When an order lands, a fiber laser etches the buyer’s name, date, or initials into the surface, and the piece ships in two to three days. The design is your template. The name is the variable.

Be upfront about this difference in your listing. A buyer expecting a cut-out script name who receives an engraved bar will leave a one-star review, even if the bar is well made. A buyer who knows they are ordering an engraved bar will judge it on its own terms, and engraved bars photograph well.

Materials, honestly described

  • 316L surgical-grade stainless steel. Printify’s engraved bar and circle necklaces use it. It resists rust and corrosion, and Printify lists it as hypoallergenic. That is true for most buyers, but avoid medical promises in your copy.
  • PVD coating. Gold and rose-gold colors come from a physical vapor deposition layer on the steel. It is durable. It is not gold.
  • IP plating. Ownprint uses ion plating for its 18K gold and rose-gold finishes. Also durable, also not solid gold.

Write “gold-tone stainless steel” or “18K gold PVD over stainless steel.” Never write “gold necklace” alone. Precise material copy costs you nothing and prevents most refund disputes before they start.

Where to source a custom name necklace in 2026

custom name necklace

We covered the full provider landscape in our custom jewelry guide for POD sellers, so this is the short version, focused on the pieces that carry a name.

Printful carries no jewelry at all. If your store runs only on Printful, you need a second supplier for this product.

Printify has the most relevant lineup for name necklaces. These are the engraved pieces, with the standard price first and the Printify Premium price second:

  • Horizontal Bar Necklace (Engraving): $18.50 / $12.76. Bar is 1.26 x 0.20 in (32 x 5 mm). US provider, 5 colors, shipping from $4.59, about 2.8 days average production.
  • Vertical Bar Necklace (Engraving): $20.72 / $15.29. Same 32 x 5 mm bar, hung vertically. About 2.5 days production. Blank sourced from China.
  • Circle Necklace (Engraving): $17.85 / $11.90. Shipping from $4.59, about 2.6 days production.
  • Heart Cutout Necklace (Engraving): $18.50 / $13.65.

The horizontal bar is the closest POD match to what name-necklace buyers want. One name, one line, read left to right.

Ownprint is a jewelry-only supplier. Its own comparison page, which is vendor marketing, lists an engraved steel necklace at $12.90 and IP gold at $14, with front and back engraving, several chain styles, and a gift box on every order. It quotes 2 to 5 business days and lists a WooCommerce plugin on its integrations page. We have not tested the plugin.

ShineOn reaches WooCommerce only through Order Desk, a paid middleware layer.

Order one sample in each finish you plan to sell. A $25 sample is the only way to see how your chosen font engraves on a 5 mm tall bar.

Designing a custom name necklace for the laser

Fiber laser engraving a blank stainless steel bar pendant

Fiber laser engraving is binary. Printify’s design guidelines describe it as an on/off process: each pixel is either engraved or left alone. There is no shading. That one fact shapes every design decision on a custom name necklace.

The file rules

From Printify’s fiber laser guidelines, checked today:

  • PNG or SVG only.
  • Solid black on a transparent background. No color, no grayscale. Assume every non-transparent pixel gets engraved, including white.
  • Convert SVG text to outlines so the font cannot be substituted.
  • Minimum line thickness: 0.2 mm.
  • Minimum text height: 1.5 mm.

How many letters fit on a 32 mm bar

Printify does not publish a character limit, so here is the geometry we use as a working rule. Leave about 2 mm of margin at each end, which gives roughly 28 mm of usable width. On a 5 mm tall bar, a bold block capital around 3 mm high runs about 2 to 2.3 mm wide with spacing. That puts a single line at roughly 12 block capitals.

Script fonts change the math. Thin connecting strokes sit close to the 0.2 mm minimum, so script needs more height to stay legible, and the letters run wider. Plan on 8 to 10 characters for a script name on the same bar. Then confirm with your sample, because every font behaves differently.

For the circle pendant, think initials, a short name of 4 to 6 letters, or a small symbol. A long name on a small disc becomes an unreadable smudge.

Fonts that survive engraving

  • Bold sans serif: the safest choice. Reads clearly at 3 mm.
  • Heavy script: the style buyers want. Pick a script with thick strokes, not a hairline wedding font.
  • Serif: elegant on bars, but fine serifs can drop below 0.2 mm. Test it first.

Offer two or three fonts at most. Every extra font is another variable to check on every order.

Your design is a template, not a finished file

On a t-shirt, you upload one design and sell it a thousand times. On a custom name necklace, you build a template: font, size, position, and any fixed symbol such as a heart, a birth flower outline, or a date line. Each order swaps in a new name. That is why the next section matters more than the artwork.

Personalization order flow from a WooCommerce store to a blank pendant

Here is the operational problem in one line. Printify’s own feature table lists automated text personalization for Etsy, Shopify, TikTok, and its Pop-Up Store. WooCommerce falls under “other sales channels,” which get manual personalization only: no automated text, no buyer preview, and no dedicated input field that Printify adds to your product page.

Printify’s help center is clear about what that means. For other channels, you add personalization instructions to your product description and collect the details yourself, through order notes, email, or a follow-up message. Personalized orders are held before production. You open each one, edit the design with the buyer’s name, and approve it. We first ran into this gap with personalized wood signs. With necklaces it hits every single order.

The answer is to build the capture step properly on your own store. Here is the pipeline we recommend.

Step 1: capture the name on the product page

Use a product add-on plugin to put real fields on the product page. The official WooCommerce Product Add-Ons extension costs $79 a year. It supports text fields that can be restricted to letters only, character limits on text areas, dropdowns, and checkboxes. Set up:

  • A name field with your character cap from the design section, 12 for block capitals or 10 for script.
  • A font dropdown with your two or three tested fonts.
  • A finish choice (silver, gold, rose gold) as a normal WooCommerce variation.
  • A required “I confirm the spelling is correct” checkbox.

Decide your policy on accents, hyphens, and apostrophes before launch. A letters-only rule blocks Zoë, Anne-Marie, and O’Brien. Test whether your font engraves those characters cleanly, then either allow them or say so in the listing.

Step 2: show the name back before payment

The cheapest typo prevention is repetition. Show the name in the cart and again on the order confirmation email, in capitals, with a line that says “We engrave exactly what you typed.” A buyer who sees “JESSCIA” three times usually catches it.

Step 3: proof only where it pays

A proof email before production adds a day and a support thread. For a single name on a bar, skip it. For long names, special characters, or memorial pieces, send a quick proof from your template. Memorial orders carry the most emotion and the highest cost of an error.

Step 4: route the order to the engraver

You have three options, from manual to automated:

  1. Printify integration, manual edit. The order imports and holds. You copy the name from the WooCommerce order screen into the design and approve it. Budget about 3 minutes per order. At 300 Q4 orders, that is 15 hours of copy and paste during your busiest weeks.
  2. Supplier plugin. Ownprint lists a WooCommerce plugin. If it passes the order fields through cleanly, it removes the copy step. Test it with a real order before Q4.
  3. API route. Render the name in your chosen font as black-on-transparent artwork, with text outlined, and submit the order through the provider’s API. This is the only route that scales without a person in the loop, and it is a small script once your template is fixed.

The template, the listing, and the SEO are the parts that eat a seller’s week before the first order arrives. MEGA automates that step entirely: one niche idea becomes engraving-ready template artwork, mockups, titles, and full listings on your owned store in under seven minutes.

Unit economics: what one custom name necklace order keeps

Stainless steel bar necklace resting on a stack of gold coins

We use Printify’s Horizontal Bar Necklace because it is the best fit for the keyword. Here is the landed cost of one Q4 order to a US buyer.

  • Base: $18.50 ($12.76 with Premium)
  • Shipping: from $4.59
  • Printify holiday surcharge: $0.40 per US order, from October 15, 2026 to January 17, 2027
  • Landed: $23.49 standard, $17.75 with Premium

Printify’s necklace pages do not list a gift box. Order a sample and see what arrives before you promise gift-ready packaging. Ownprint includes a gift box on every order, which is a real advantage for this product.

The retail ladder

RetailGross per orderGross marginWith Premium
$34$10.5130.9%$16.25 (47.8%)
$44$20.5146.6%$26.25 (59.7%)
$54$30.5156.5%$36.25 (67.1%)

Card processing at a typical 2.9% plus $0.30 takes about $1.58 from a $44 order, which leaves $18.93 standard.

Two readings matter. First, $34 is too thin. A single remake or a free-shipping promo wipes it out. Second, $44 is the sweet spot. It sits well below the $60 to $150 retail nameplates on page one while still clearing 46%. A $54 tier works for gold PVD finishes or front-and-back engraving.

The Premium break-even

Premium saves $5.74 per horizontal bar. At $39 a month, it pays for itself at 7 necklaces a month. On the yearly plan at $24.99 a month, it pays at 5. If you sell name necklaces through Q4, Premium is an easy call.

The typo reserve

Printify reprints production defects. It does not reprint a name the buyer typed wrong, and a personalized necklace cannot be resold. Every remake you choose to cover costs a full $23.49. Plan a reserve. If 1 order in 50 needs a goodwill remake, set aside $0.47 per order. At 1 in 25, it is $0.94. The capture workflow above is how you keep that number low.

The Shopify tax on the same volume

Credit where it is due: on Shopify, Printify’s automated text personalization works, and that saves real hours. The cost is the platform. At a $44 AOV and 300 Q4 orders, that is $13,200 in revenue. Shopify’s 1% override when you use a third-party payment gateway takes $132 from that one quarter, on top of the monthly plan and any personalization apps. At 1,200 orders a year it becomes $528, and it rises with every sale.

An owned WooCommerce store runs on fixed hosting, typically $180 to $360 a year, plus $79 for the add-on fields. It does not grow with your revenue. The full comparison is in our WooCommerce vs Shopify breakdown for POD sellers.

Niches and occasions that buy name necklaces

Hands opening a black gift box with a blank gold-tone bar necklace

The buyer is rarely the wearer. Most name necklaces are gifts, so write your listings for the person paying, and organize your collections by who they are buying for.

  • Moms and grandmas. Kids’ or grandkids’ names on one bar. This is the core of the category. Offer a two-name bar and a stacked set of single bars.
  • Couples. Two names and a date, or a date alone in a clean serif. Strong for anniversaries and Valentine’s Day.
  • Memorial. A name and a pair of years. Treat these with care in copy and photography, and always offer a proof.
  • Pets. A pet’s name with a small paw symbol. Printify also stocks a Cutout Paw Bar Necklace for this buyer.
  • Bridesmaids. Sold in sets of 4 to 8. One order, several names, a much larger basket. Price the set, not the single piece.
  • Graduation and faith. A name with a class year, or a name with a small cross outline. Both sell on short, predictable windows.

The name necklace calendar

  • Q4 gifting, now. List by early November. Set a clear personalized-order cutoff in early December so production and shipping land before December 25. Our print on demand holiday products guide covers the full Q4 calendar.
  • Valentine’s Day. Couples pieces. Start promoting in mid-January.
  • Mother’s Day. Typically the strongest name-necklace window of the year. Start in early April with kids’-names bars. Put a reminder on your calendar to refresh your listings in March.
  • Graduation season. May and June.

Name necklaces also cross-sell with other name-driven gifts. A buyer who orders a blanket with the family’s names is already in a personalized-gift mindset. That buyer is a strong retargeting audience for a matching necklace.

Listings and mockups that convert

Blank gold-tone bar necklace worn at the collarbone

A name necklace listing has one job: show the buyer exactly what their name will look like. Generic jewelry photography does not do that.

Mockup rules

  • Show several name lengths. A short name (Ava), a medium one (Olivia), and a long one at your cap (Alexandria). Buyers with long names need to see that theirs fits.
  • Show every finish. Silver, gold, and rose gold, side by side, in the same light.
  • Show scale. A worn shot at the collarbone and a shot next to a coin or a fingertip. A 32 mm bar is smaller than most buyers picture.
  • Show the packaging you actually ship. If your supplier includes a gift box, photograph that box. If it does not, do not imply one.
  • Use real engraving on mockups. AI image models still invent fake letters. A blank AI render is fine for mood shots, but every shot that shows a name must come from the provider mockup tool or a photo of your sample.

Listing copy

Put the facts buyers ask about in the first lines: material, bar size in inches and millimeters, chain length options, finish, production time, and the character limit. Check which chain lengths your provider offers and list them plainly. Buyers often ask whether a necklace will sit at the collarbone or lower.

Spell out your personalization policy: “We engrave exactly what you type. Please check spelling. Personalized items cannot be returned unless they arrive damaged or misprinted.” That sentence prevents more disputes than any FAQ.

The same proofing rules apply to other engraved products. Our custom keychain guide covers the identical workflow on a cheaper item, which makes keychains a good place to test your capture fields before Q4.

Final thoughts on selling a custom name necklace

Minimal POD workspace with blank steel pendants and a coiled chain

The custom name necklace is a rare POD product: high search demand, an emotional gift purchase, a $44 price point that clears 46% at standard pricing, and a base cost under $19. The catch is the name. Every order is a custom file, and on WooCommerce, Printify will not collect that name for you.

So treat the personalization pipeline as the product. Cap the characters. Test two or three fonts on a real sample. Capture the name with proper fields, show it back to the buyer twice, and route it to the engraver with as little copy and paste as possible. Do that, and an owned store keeps the margin that Shopify would take a percentage of.

Are POD name necklaces real gold?

No. POD name necklaces are almost always 316L stainless steel, with gold and rose-gold colors from PVD coating or IP plating. Describe them as gold-tone stainless steel.

Can I sell custom name necklaces on WooCommerce?

Yes. Printify connects to WooCommerce, but personalization is manual for that channel. Collect the name with a product add-on field, then add it to the held order yourself, or automate the step through a supplier plugin or the API.

What happens if the customer misspells the name?

Providers reprint production defects, not buyer typos. Use a confirm-spelling checkbox, show the name back in the cart and the confirmation email, and keep a small remake reserve of about $0.50 to $1 per order.

How long does engraving take?

Printify lists about 2.5 to 2.8 days of average production for its engraved bar necklaces, plus shipping. Ownprint quotes 2 to 5 business days.

How many letters fit on a name necklace?

On Printify’s 32 x 5 mm bar, plan on about 12 bold block capitals or 8 to 10 script characters. Confirm with a sample in your chosen font.
