Custom pennant flags for POD stores: which providers carry them, sublimation vs felt explained, and the unit cost math
A custom pennant flag looks like the simplest product in print-on-demand: one piece of fabric, one design, one dowel. Search the term, though, and you get handmade felt studios charging $65 to $159 for personalized pieces, plus bulk promo vendors selling string pennants by the hundred. Not one result tells a POD seller which providers carry pennants today, what they actually cost landed, or how to price them so the margin survives shipping.
This guide does. We pulled live pricing from Printful and Printify in October 2026, compared felt against sublimated polyester, and ran the unit cost math at three retail price points. The short version: pennants are a real no-minimum POD product now, but the $22 to $29 retail range most people assume does not work once you add shipping. Here is what does.
What a custom pennant flag is, and the three formats buyers mean

“Pennant” covers three different products. Buyers rarely say which one they want, so your listing has to make it obvious.
1. The long triangle
This is the classic stadium and campus pennant. A long, narrow triangle, traditionally wool felt, with a sewn sleeve on the short edge. Vintage sizes run from about 9 x 24 inches to 12 x 30 inches. This shape is what most people picture, and it is what the handmade felt studios sell.
2. The banner pennant on a dowel
A shorter, wider piece, often with a pointed or swallowtail bottom edge, hung from a wooden dowel with a twine loop. Printful’s and Printify’s main pennant products are this format, at 18 x 21 inches. It reads as wall decor more than sports memorabilia, which matters for how you photograph and title it.
3. String pennants (bunting)
Small triangles on a cord, sold for parties, weddings, car lots, and bars. This is mostly a bulk promo product with minimums. It is not where a POD seller should compete, and we will not spend much time on it here.
For a POD store, formats 1 and 2 are the opportunity. Format 2 is available with zero inventory from the two largest providers. Format 1 is available in canvas through the Printify network. Both sit in the gap between a $10 sticker and a $90 framed print, which is exactly where gift buyers like to shop.
Which POD providers carry a custom pennant flag in 2026

Older guides (and our own early research notes) said Printful did not carry pennants. That is no longer true. Here is what we found on the live product pages, US region, October 2026.
Printful: Pennant, 18″ x 21″, sublimation
- Base price: $14.62, print included
- US shipping: from $7.29
- Technique: sublimation
- Landed cost for one unit: about $21.91
It sits in Printful’s wall art category, which tells you how Printful expects it to be sold: as decor, not as a sports novelty.
Printify: Pennant (generic brand), 18″ x 21″
- Base price: from $14.58, or from $10.57 with Printify Premium
- US shipping: from $7.19
- Material: 100% polyester twill, one-sided print, laser-cut edges
- Hardware: wooden dowel (24 inches) and twine frame included
- Hanging length: 25 inches including the twine
- Tolerance: print placement may vary by up to 0.5 inches
- Landed cost: about $21.77, or $17.76 on Premium
Printify: AS Colour Canvas Pennant Flag, 30 x 45 cm
- Base price: from $15.98, or from $11.75 with Premium
- US shipping: from $6.39
- Format: true triangular pennant, cotton canvas, metal eyelets
- Decoration: DTF or DTG
- Caveat: listed as early access with no pre-made mockups, so you build your own product photos
The same AS Colour blank is also available through Apliiq at $15.99 per item for digital print ($12.79 with their VIP plan), if you already fulfill through them.
So the realistic landed cost for a single pennant, any provider, is $21 to $23 before any subscription discount. Every pricing decision below starts from that number. If you have not compared providers on other wall decor yet, our custom flag guide covers the larger garden and house flag formats from the same catalogs.
Felt vs sublimated polyester: why a handmade custom pennant flag costs $65 and up

The premium end of this SERP belongs to studios like Oxford Pennant in Buffalo, New York. Their personalized pieces list from $65 to $159. They are not overcharging. They are selling a different product.
How traditional felt pennants are made
Wool or wool-blend felt is cut, then the design is either screen printed in a few flat spot colors or built from layered felt pieces stitched on by hand (appliqué). Each color is a separate step. Each letter in a personalized piece is labor. That is why felt pennants come in bold, flat, limited palettes, and why a one-off custom felt pennant costs what it does.
How POD pennants are made
Sublimation turns dye into a gas under heat and pressure, and the gas bonds into polyester fibers. The print becomes part of the fabric. It does not crack or peel, and there is no color limit. A photograph, a gradient, or a 40-color illustration costs the same to print as a single orange stripe. The canvas pennant uses DTF or DTG instead, since sublimation only bonds to polyester.
When each one is the right product
| Handmade felt | POD sublimated polyester | |
|---|---|---|
| Retail price | $65 to $159 personalized | $34 to $45 (see math below) |
| Colors | Few, flat | Unlimited, photographic |
| Feel | Thick, heirloom, textured | Smooth, light, crisp edges |
| Lead time | Often weeks | Days |
| Best buyer | Collector, nostalgia gift | Decor, fan, party, personalized gift |
Do not try to beat felt on texture. You will lose. Beat it on design range, turnaround, and price. A buyer who wants a nursery pennant in watercolor with the baby’s name, delivered next week, is not shopping at $140. That buyer is your customer.
Unit cost math for a custom pennant flag at three price points

Smash print-on-demand. Join the engine room.
One short email a week. Real numbers, real teardowns, the unfiltered economics behind every move.

Using Printful’s live numbers ($14.62 base plus $7.29 shipping, $21.91 landed) and assuming you charge the shipping into the product price, as most gift stores do:
| Retail | Landed cost | Payment fees (approx. 3% + $0.30) | Gross profit | Gross margin |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $29 | $21.91 | $1.17 | $5.92 | 20% |
| $34 | $21.91 | $1.32 | $10.77 | 32% |
| $39 | $21.91 | $1.47 | $15.62 | 40% |
At $29, you clear under $6 per order. One refund or reprint wipes out the profit on the next three sales. At $39, you clear about $15.60, which is the same dollar profit as a well-priced tee and better than most mugs.
What changes on Printify Premium
Premium drops the base to $10.57. At $39 retail, landed cost becomes $17.76 and gross profit rises to about $19.77, a 51% margin. If pennants become a meaningful share of your catalog, the subscription pays for itself quickly. Run that math on your real order count before you commit.
Personalization is where the price holds
A generic pennant competes on Etsy at $25. A pennant with the buyer’s family name and established year, the baby’s name and birth date, or the couple’s wedding date does not. Personalized decor routinely holds $39 to $45, and the buyer does not comparison shop because no one else has their exact product.
Sets raise dollars per order
Shipping on additional items in the same order is lower than the first-item rate at both Printful and Printify, so sets get better per unit. Check the provider’s shipping table for the current additional-item rate. Even if you assume full shipping on every unit, which overstates your cost, a three-pennant “room set” at $99 lands at $65.73 and clears about $30 per order. That is double the dollar profit of a single pennant on one checkout, one ad click, and one customer service thread.
Niches where a custom pennant flag actually sells

Pennants carry nostalgia, identity, and place. The niches that work are the ones where the buyer wants to announce who they are or who they love.
Baby and kids’ rooms
Name pennants for nurseries are the strongest personalized niche. Soft palettes, the child’s name, maybe an animal or a moon. Parents and grandparents buy them, and baby showers create a steady stream of gift orders all year.
Dorm rooms and first apartments
August and September are peak months for dorm decor. One warning: college names, mascots, and logos are trademarked and licensed. Do not sell them. Sell the mood instead. “Class of 2030,” hometown coordinates, a home state outline, or an inside joke between roommates all work without legal risk.
Sports fan decor, without the logos
The same rule applies to pro teams. Skip team names and marks. Original designs for the sport itself sell well: vintage-style baseball diamonds, rec league team pennants with the buyer’s own team name, youth soccer end-of-season gifts with each kid’s name. Pair them with jerseys from our custom baseball jersey guide for a team bundle.
Bars, breweries, and small businesses
Craft breweries, coffee shops, and barbershops buy pennants with their own branding for wall decor and sell them as merch. These are small B2B orders of 5 to 20 units that arrive by email, and they repeat when a business opens a second location.
Weddings and events
“Just married” pennants for photo props, last-name-and-date pennants as a wedding gift, bachelorette weekend pennants. The wedding buyer pays for emotion, not fabric, so price at the top of your range.
Hobby and place identity
Hiking clubs, national park lovers, lake house owners, van lifers, and hometown pride all work. Pennants are souvenirs, and your listing can be a souvenir from somewhere the buyer has been. If you want to expand these buyers into larger wall pieces later, our custom canvas print guide covers the next step up in AOV.

Shopify’s 1% override vs WooCommerce at a $34 pennant AOV

Pennants are a mid-AOV product, which makes percentage fees more painful than they look. At a $34 average order, a single pennant clears about $10.77 gross. A 1% platform fee is $0.34 of that, or 3% of your profit on every order.
The annual math
- 100 orders a month at $34: $40,800 a year in revenue, $408 in 1% override fees
- 200 orders a month at $34: $81,600 a year, $816 in override fees
- 500 orders a month at $34: $204,000 a year, $2,040 in override fees
That is before the Shopify plan itself and before apps. On WooCommerce, hosting runs a fixed $15 to $30 a month, or $180 to $360 a year, whether you sell 10 pennants or 10,000. We broke down the full comparison in our WooCommerce vs Shopify guide for POD sellers.
Personalization fields are the hidden cost
Name pennants need a text field at checkout, and wedding pennants need a date. On Shopify, that usually means a product options app at $19 to $49 a month. WooCommerce handles custom text fields with free or one-time-cost add-ons, and the field value flows into the order so your fulfillment step can read it.
You keep the customer
Nursery and wedding buyers come back. The baby gets a sibling, the couple has an anniversary, the brewery opens a second taproom. On an owned WooCommerce store, that buyer is on your email list with their order history, and the second sale costs you nothing in ads.
Design specs for a custom pennant flag that prints clean

Pennants fail in predictable ways: cropped names, artwork lost behind the dowel sleeve, and designs that look great on a monitor but disappear on a wall at 10 feet. Here is how to avoid all three.
Resolution
- 18 x 21 inch banner pennant: at least 2,700 x 3,150 px at 150 DPI
- 30 x 45 cm triangular canvas pennant: at least 1,772 x 2,657 px at 150 DPI
Always download the provider’s template. It shows the sleeve area, the cut line, and the shape of the point, which differ by product.
Safe zones
Printify notes print placement can shift by up to half an inch. Keep every name, date, and important detail at least 0.75 inches from the cut edge. On a triangle, the usable area narrows fast toward the point, so put text in the wide top third and let the point carry color or pattern only. Leave the top band clear for the dowel sleeve.
Readability at distance
A pennant is read from across a room. Use bold, heavy type. Avoid thin serifs, condensed fonts, and script fonts below about 1.5 inches tall. Strong contrast between text and background matters more than color choice. Dark backgrounds with light type read well and photograph well in product shots.
Color and file format
Export PNG in sRGB unless the provider’s file guidelines say otherwise. Sublimation produces vivid color on polyester, but very dark navy and black can print slightly lighter than on screen. Order one sample of every new design family before you launch it. At about $22 landed, it is cheap insurance, and the sample doubles as your real product photo.
Mockups
The AS Colour canvas pennant has no pre-made mockups on Printify. Photograph your sample on a plain wall with soft side light, or use lifestyle mockups that show the pennant above a crib, over a desk, or in a bar. Context sells pennants because buyers are imagining a room, not a piece of fabric. The same approach works for low-AOV add-ons like those in our custom sticker sheet guide, which make good cart add-ons for pennant buyers.
Quick answers to common pennant questions
Can I print on both sides? Not on the Printify 18 x 21 pennant, which is one-sided. Design for a single wall-facing view.
Is the polyester pennant washable? Printify lists it as spot clean only. Say so on the listing to cut down on returns from buyers who expect a machine-washable textile.
Can I heat-press my own felt pennants instead? Yes. Wholesale blank felt pennants are available with no minimum, and you can press transfers in-house. That is a different business, though: you hold inventory, you pack orders, and your time becomes the bottleneck. It suits local events and school fundraisers better than a nationwide online store.
Do the dowel and twine come included? On the Printify generic pennant, yes. The AS Colour canvas pennant uses metal eyelets instead, so mention in the listing that the buyer supplies their own hanging cord or hooks.
Conclusion: the custom pennant flag verdict for POD sellers

A custom pennant flag is a legitimate no-minimum POD product in 2026. Printful and Printify both carry an 18 x 21 inch sublimated pennant at about $14.60 base, and the Printify network adds a true triangular canvas pennant at about $16.
The economics only work if you respect shipping. Landed cost is $21 to $23 for a single unit. Price singles at $34 to $39, push personalization to hold $39 to $45, and offer a three-pennant room set as the default upsell. At $29 you are working for the shipping company.
The niches are clear: nurseries, dorms and first apartments, rec league sports, breweries and small businesses, weddings, and place pride. Keep every design original and stay away from team and college marks.
Handmade felt studios charge $65 and up because, until recently, there was no fast, affordable alternative. Now there is, and the seller who lists it on an owned store with native personalization fields keeps the margin and the customer.
